Sky Mobile
A mobile service owning no masts, distinguished by banked allowances and monthly resizing on capacity rented entirely from O2.
A television group's mobile service that owns no masts at all, competing on two genuinely clever retail mechanics — and worth most inside a household that already takes its other services.
§1Background
Sky Mobile began trading in 2016 without building any infrastructure. It sits within Sky UK, under Comcast, and rents every part of its signal from O2.
That single fact governs everything: coverage, congestion and network faults are O2 matters. What Sky brings is retail machinery layered on top.
| Detail | Position |
|---|---|
| Began | 2016 |
| Masts owned | None |
| Signal from | O2, bought wholesale |
| Inherits | O2's footprint, including its evening congestion in busy centres |
| Also possible | Rented traffic queueing behind the landlord's own customers at saturated masts |

§2What is offered
Two mechanics that no other UK operator combines in the same way.
| Feature | What you are actually buying |
|---|---|
| The data reserve | Unused allowance banks rather than expiring — scheme rules have historically kept it up to three years |
| Monthly resizing | Tiers have historically moved up or down each month without penalty |
| Device credit | On its own line, ending at repayment, settleable early |
| Household sharing | Banked allowance can be passed between SIMs on one account |
| Home broadband | Sky Broadband over Openreach and full-fibre partners — nothing to do with masts |
| Roaming | Daily passes by band, switched on in the app |
Feature timing is the cost of renting: eSIM arrived later here than at the mast owners and still varies by handset, and Wi-Fi Calling support has historically trailed the landlord's.
§3SIM plans
The reserve and the resizing only pay if you act on them — resize down in quiet months, draw the bank down in heavy ones. Today's scheme rules live in the app and should be read in their current form rather than trusted from memory.
Where unlimited is qualified. Unmetered on the handset at home; bent in three places:
- Tethering capped on some plan generations despite the headline.
- Brief queueing at extremely saturated masts for outliers only.
- A fair-use ceiling everywhere abroad, then per-gigabyte charging.
Sizing the allowance. Your network app records real consumption. Three months of it, plus modest headroom, is the figure to buy — the gap between estimate and reality is commonly around double.
§4Phone contracts
Handsets sit on device credit of their own, ending at repayment and settleable early — a materially tidier arrangement than a combined bundle.
Where a mid-term trade-up is offered, establish what happens to any outstanding balance on the existing handset before agreeing.

§5Pay as you go
Limited compared with the mast owners. Where prepaid is what you actually want, the landlord or another wholesale brand on the same masts is generally the better route.
§6Bills, month to month
| Figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Tier charge | Resizable monthly; judge it post-discount |
| Device credit line | Separate, and ends at repayment |
| Household discounts | Where the real value sits, if you take Sky television or broadband |
| Reserve balance | The feature you are paying a household premium for — check it is being used |
§7Price changes
Mid-contract increases must be stated in pounds and pence before signature since January 2025.
The reduction unique to Sky is resizing the tier downwards in a quiet month — with banking, nothing is lost by doing it. Beyond that, drawing banked data down beats a permanent upgrade for a single heavy month.
§8Verify before you commit
- Check O2's coverage map at your postcode, not Sky's marketing. The landlord decides your signal entirely.
- Confirm your exact handset supports eSIM and Wi-Fi Calling on Sky, if either matters. Support on O2 does not imply support here.
- If you take no other Sky service, price the tier against giffgaff and Tesco Mobile on the identical masts before committing.
- Read the app's rules on drawing banked data while abroad before you fly.
§9Common pitfalls
§10Joining
§11Leaving
Switching runs on two text messages and requires no conversation.
| Code | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text PAC to 65075 | Carries your number across. Free, back within minutes, valid thirty days. |
| Text STAC to 75075 | Closes the account without carrying the number. |
| The reply | Itemises any term charge and device balance before you commit. |
Your provider may not refuse the code, delay it, attach conditions, or make a retention call a precondition of leaving.
A single household bill makes leaving feel weightier than it is. In law it changes nothing — the text works identically whether you hold one Sky service or five.
