Advisory note AN-02

EE

BT Group's premium operator: the broadest footprint in the country, the lead on standalone 5G, and the costliest months once a term ends.

Independent status. fernwick is an independent guidance and information service. We are not a mobile network. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, appointed by or connected to Three, EE, O2, Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile or any other provider, and we hold no commercial arrangement with any of them. We do not sell, supply, arrange or broker SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind, and we take no commission. Everything published here is general information and must not be relied upon in place of the provider's own current terms.
Our position in one line

The country's broadest footprint, priced accordingly — genuinely worth the premium where your week depends on signal, and genuinely not where it does not.

§1Background

EE was formed in 2010 out of Orange and T-Mobile, and in 2012 switched on the first fourth-generation service in the United Kingdom. The spectrum brought together at that merger largely explains the footprint it still holds.

It belongs to BT Group, whose consumer services are steadily moving under the EE name and behind a single account login.

§2What is offered

The full range, with the most complete customer app in the market and the national lead on standalone 5G — which runs on its own modern core rather than leaning on 4G beneath it.

ServiceWhat you are actually buying
SIM plansA tier ladder to unlimited, priced above the value brands, with riders on larger tiers
Phone contractsCombined handset and airtime over 24–36 months
Pay as you goDirect, or per-unit through 1pMobile on identical masts
eSIMOne of the smoothest in-app processes available
Home broadbandOpenreach lines, with a router option for badly wired streets
RoamingA daily charge on most current plans; some higher tiers restore inclusive roaming

Standalone 5G is quicker where live, remains the smallest layer of the network, and needs a recent handset — so check both your device and your area before paying for it.

§3SIM plans

FeatureWhat to make of it
Rolling and fixed termsRolling wherever anything is unproven; fixed only where signal and address are settled
Bundled extrasStreaming and security riders — worth counting only if you would have bought them anyway
Family SIMsReal reductions; price the household rather than the single line
Annual upgrade schemesA recurring fee for permanent newness — a subscription rather than a saving
1pMobileThe cheap door into the same coverage, billing per unit used

Where unlimited is qualified. Unmetered on the handset at home; bent in three places:

  • Tethering capped on some plan generations despite the headline.
  • Brief queueing at extremely saturated masts for outliers only.
  • A fair-use ceiling everywhere abroad, then per-gigabyte charging.

Sizing the allowance. Your network app records real consumption. Three months of it, plus modest headroom, is the figure to buy — the gap between estimate and reality is commonly around double.

§4Phone contracts

Combined bundles across twenty-four to thirty-six months, with wide handset availability and standard trade-in arrangements.

Because EE's airtime carries a premium, the months after a term ends cost more here than anywhere else in the market.

Common pitfallSet the reminder a month before the end date rather than on it — decisions taken on the day are rushed ones, and on EE they are the most expensive rushed decisions available.

One sum tests any proposal: upfront plus monthly times months, against the handset bought outright plus the cheapest suitable SIM.

§5Pay as you go

Available directly, with no contract and no credit check. The more interesting route is 1pMobile, which charges per minute, text and megabyte on EE's own masts.

For genuinely light use it is the cheapest way in the country to hold the broadest coverage. For anyone with a regular data habit, per-unit rates climb quickly. It is also the ideal SIM for testing EE before committing to premium airtime.

§6Bills, month to month

FigureWhy it matters
Post-discount priceThe real price, and the only fair comparison
Bundled household totalWhere EE's value most often concentrates — price the house, not the line
Out-of-contract figureThe most expensive drift in the market, owing to premium airtime
Spend capFree, one minute, and the main defence against charges beyond the allowance

§7Price changes

Mid-contract increases must be stated in pounds and pence before signature since January 2025 — historically EE's sorest subject with customers, which makes that line worth reading twice and photographing.

A bill comes down by the same routes as anywhere: SIM-only at term end, a right-sized allowance, add-ons instead of upgrades, competing quotes in hand, or departure.

Common pitfallTransfers of BT consumer accounts to EE have occasionally muddled bundled statements. If yours goes wrong, complain in writing and keep every reference — that paperwork is what an ombudsman reads.

§8Verify before you commit

  • Run EE's checker and Ofcom's at your own postcode. Broadest is not universal; champions have dead addresses too.
  • Spend a month on 1pMobile first — identical masts, negligible cost.
  • Check both handset support and local availability before paying anything extra for standalone 5G.
  • Total any annual upgrade scheme across three or four years before agreeing to it.
  • Set a unique password on the EE account, which now protects broadband and more besides mobile.

§9Common pitfalls

Common pitfallPaying premium airtime for coverage insurance you never claim. If everyone covers your area well, the same money buys far more data elsewhere.
Common pitfallCounting bundled streaming and security riders as savings when you would not otherwise have bought them.
Common pitfallDrifting past the end date. On EE this is the costliest version of that mistake anywhere in the market.
Common pitfallAssuming your tier includes European roaming. Most current plans charge daily; only certain higher tiers restore inclusion, and the app is the authority.

§10Joining

Coverage-check your own postcode regardless of the national record.
Audition on EE pay as you go or 1pMobile for a month.
Buy the plan and bring your number in with the free code.
First day: Wi-Fi Calling on, 4G Calling on, spend cap set, end date diarised, unique password on the account.

§11Leaving

Switching runs on two text messages and requires no conversation.

CodeWhat it does
Text PAC to 65075Carries your number across. Free, back within minutes, valid thirty days.
Text STAC to 75075Closes the account without carrying the number.
The replyItemises any term charge and device balance before you commit.

Your provider may not refuse the code, delay it, attach conditions, or make a retention call a precondition of leaving.

Buy the new plan first.
Text for the code and read the itemised reply.
Hand it over and keep the old SIM in until the number lands.
Diary a check that the final bill closes at zero.
If a complaint stalls: write, keep the reference, and refer it free to the Communications Ombudsman at eight weeks or on a final response.

One account holding mobile, broadband and television makes leaving feel weightier. In law it changes nothing.
