Phone contracts
How handset agreements are built, the single sum that settles any proposal, and the month in which most people begin overpaying.
Every handset offer reduces to upfront plus monthly times months — and the most expensive month of any agreement is the first one after it ends.
§1The three routes
| Route | What it means |
|---|---|
| Combined bundle | Handset and airtime as one monthly figure. Used by most providers. Does not reduce at term end. |
| Split contract | Device credit and airtime billed separately. Used by O2 and Sky Mobile. The device half ends at repayment. |
| Outright plus a SIM | Handset bought in full, airtime bought separately. Usually the lowest total, and the benchmark either way. |
A credit check applies to any monthly device agreement. SIM-only and prepaid stay light in that respect.

§2The sum that settles it
Upfront payment plus monthly charge multiplied by months, across the whole term. Then set that against the same handset bought outright plus the cheapest suitable SIM over the same period. The smaller figure wins.
Cost slides between the upfront and the monthly like a see-saw, which is exactly why two shops can present entirely different structures for one handset and both call theirs the cheapest.
§3The end of the term
On a combined bundle the monthly figure does not fall when the minimum term ends. Device money keeps being collected on a handset you already own outright, indefinitely, until you do something about it.
On a split contract the device half genuinely stops — but the airtime half continues at the same rate until you reduce it.
§4Trade-in, delivery and returns
| Matter | What to know |
|---|---|
| Trade-in | Quotes swing with condition, storage and season. Take two — the maker's programme and one independent recycler. |
| Before sending | Erase the handset, unlink accounts, and photograph it in case of dispute. |
| Next-day delivery | Needs your exact model in stock and an order before the cut-off, usually mid-afternoon. |
| Collection | Often faster where a nearby branch holds the exact variant. |
| Cooling-off | Online orders carry a period, commonly fourteen days — a free trial of handset and network together. |
§5Using the returns window properly
- Signal at home and at work, room by room — not just the doorstep.
- Battery across several ordinary days rather than one charge cycle.
- Camera, screen, and how the device actually sits in your hand.
- Packaging and accessories kept complete until you have decided.
