Tesco Mobile
A supermarket-backed brand on O2's masts, distinguished by loyalty-linked pricing and a long record of customer satisfaction.
A supermarket-backed brand on O2's masts, competing on plain pricing and a long service record — genuinely cheaper if your household already shops there, and ordinary if it does not.
§1Background
Tesco Mobile has traded for many years as a supermarket-backed consumer brand buying wholesale capacity from O2. Its position has always been plain pricing and household value rather than technical differentiation, and it has recorded consistently strong customer satisfaction over that period — which is not true of every wholesale brand.
| Detail | Position |
|---|---|
| Masts owned | None |
| Signal from | O2, bought wholesale |
| Position | Value and service |
| Perks | Lighter than the landlord's own scheme |
| Newest tiers | Occasionally arrive later than on O2 itself |
Uncertain whose network you would be buying?
Telephone the advisory and we will talk it through. There is nothing to buy at any point.
§2What is offered
| Service | What you are actually buying |
|---|---|
| SIM plans | Rolling monthly and fixed terms, small allowances through to unlimited |
| Loyalty linkage | Supermarket loyalty reduces the effective cost for regular shoppers |
| Family arrangements | Multi-line reductions under one account |
| Pay as you go | Available, with straightforward rates |
| eSIM | Supported on recent handsets, free to issue and transfer |
| Phone contracts | Handset and airtime combined |
Coverage, including O2's evening congestion in busy centres, is inherited in full.
§3SIM plans
The distinguishing lever is the loyalty linkage. It should be converted into an actual monthly figure before you compare anything — if it comes to little, price giffgaff on the identical masts instead.
Where unlimited is qualified. Unmetered on the handset at home; bent in three places:
- Tethering capped on some plan generations despite the headline.
- Brief queueing at extremely saturated masts for outliers only.
- A fair-use ceiling everywhere abroad, then per-gigabyte charging.
Sizing the allowance. Your network app records real consumption. Three months of it, plus modest headroom, is the figure to buy — the gap between estimate and reality is commonly around double.
§4Phone contracts
Combined bundles, with a credit check on the device element and the usual end-of-term position: the figure does not fall by itself. Test any proposal with the same sum — upfront plus monthly times months, against outright plus a cheap SIM.

§5Pay as you go
Straightforward credit-based rates with no contract and no credit check — useful for spare handsets, a child's first phone, and testing O2's coverage before committing.
§6Bills, month to month
| Figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Post-discount price | The real price |
| Loyalty reduction | Only real if your household actually shops there |
| Out-of-contract figure | Continues unchanged until you act |
| Spend cap | Free, and rarely enabled |
§7Price changes
Mid-contract increases must be stated in pounds and pence before signature since January 2025. A bill comes down through a right-sized allowance, SIM-only at term end, competing quotes, departure — and, here, by making sure the loyalty linkage is actually applied.
§8Verify before you commit
- Check O2's coverage at your postcode, weighting indoor predictions.
- Convert the loyalty benefit into a monthly figure and compare it against giffgaff on the same masts.
- Confirm the tier you want is available here — the newest tiers occasionally arrive later than on O2.
- Set the free spend cap on the day the SIM activates.
§9Common pitfalls
§10Joining
§11Leaving
Switching runs on two text messages and requires no conversation.
| Code | What it does |
|---|---|
| Text PAC to 65075 | Carries your number across. Free, back within minutes, valid thirty days. |
| Text STAC to 75075 | Closes the account without carrying the number. |
| The reply | Itemises any term charge and device balance before you commit. |
Your provider may not refuse the code, delay it, attach conditions, or make a retention call a precondition of leaving.
Complaints go to Tesco Mobile, in writing with the reference kept, and never to O2.
